Leyland Daf 45 4x4 Overland Expedition Vehicle | Living in a Hiace Camper Van

Every so often on my travels, I come across a really interesting or unusual camping vehicle, so I thought I'd start to share some of them with you. I had a lot of feedback on the post I wrote a while ago on Jo's Citroen Berlingo camper, as it gave people some good ideas for their own van conversions, and seeing how others have set up their vans is always inspiring.

This camping vehicle is certainly one of the more unusual and special ones I've come across, and I actually had the opportunity to spend the night in it myself back in October! Originally a British Army truck, its been lovingly converted into a fully blown 4WD expedition truck, designed to go anywhere in the world, in comfort and style..

On first seeing this vehicle I was struck by its ruggedness on the outside, and its sense of homeliness on the inside. In fact, inside its like a small modern apartment, with all the comforts you'd expect from say a self catering bedsit. Inside I found that it doesn't feel at all like being in a motorhome, or camper - you'd be forgiven for thinking you are inside a bricks and mortar home, it feels so solid. It was quite a windy evening I spent in it, and there was none of the usual buffeting I come to expect in the camper van.

I made myself a cup of tea on the stove, and then sat at the kitchen table to watch a film on the flat screen TV/DVD player. With all the blinds down for the night, and the heater running it was really cosy, and I sat up quite a while before deciding it was time for bed. I hadn't finished the film, so I moved the TV from the wall bracket in the living area to the bracket in the bedroom, closed the sliding door and settled down on the comfy mattress. When the film was over I had a great nights sleep on a bed much bigger than I'm used to in my Hiace. Here's a video of the interior of the truck so you can see just what its like..

This is quite an awesome beast in my opinion. As well as being a fully 4WD V6, 6 litre Turbo Diesel off roader, it has a 260 litre diesel tank, a 100 litre reserve tank, and a 500 litre water tank on board. The pod is fully insulated for colder weather, and has a gas fire as well as a hot air heater. The bathroom is really beautiful inside and has a power shower, toilet and wash hand basin, and is all tiled in white - I wish there was room for all this in the Hiace..

If you're interested in a vehicle like this, I've been informed that this one has recently come up for sale, and its listed on ebay here.
